TWA

Open House New York hosted a tour of the TWA terminal at JFK today (Eero Saarinen's 1962 wing-shaped thin-shell concrete terminal). It was amazing to see an old structure filled with people again, and more amazing to meet people who actually flew through the terminal before its closure in 2001. I spoke to one woman who flew through TWA on her way to her honeymoon in 1966. Another woman I saw came dressed in uniform from her time serving as a TWA flight attendant in the 1960s. My mother and father even flew through here when they first arrived in America.

What I'm not so amazed with are the plans to convert this marvel of engineering, design, and history into the lobby for a hotel projected to open in 2018...
